The process of adding a new attraction is always exciting. More for your guests to explore, increased revenue over time and a bit of a refreshed feeling for your facility. But even before the attraction is installed you have one major decision to make: will it be indoors or outdoors? Perhaps you already know and it’s over and done but if you’re undecided, you’ve got a few factors to consider and they go as follows:
- How much space do you have indoors vs. outdoors?
- Will the scenery outside be enhanced with an attraction?
- What is the weather situation annually?
We have chosen to focus on these 3 particular questions as your answers to each of them will really help decide the best course of action. Time to deliberate!
- Amount of space available
You’ve got to have space to work with somewhere or the addition of another attraction just doesn’t make any sense. Is there a viable option indoors above arcade games or would the attraction in question be better suited outside and sit comfortably with ample room there? Planning is key and can obviously help avoid many “disasters” down the road.
If you already have a spot mapped out, perfect. If not, collaborate with others involved in making major decisions for your facility to discuss the pros and cons of having it installed in various spots whether that be inside or outside of your business.
- Possible enhanced scenery
This may pertain more to locations that heavily focus on the preservation of wildlife or natural wonders like zoos and cavern sites but even if you’ve got a family entertainment center and want to up your outside appearance, placing the attraction outdoors could be an option.

- Weather: stable vs. unpredictable
A huge factor that will affect the placement of your next attraction is the climate. Where your business is located, is it generally warm, cold or entirely out of whack? Depending on your answer, you may want to reconsider your decision.
While outdoor attractions allow participants to make the most out of a nice day and experience the beautiful sights, indoor attractions are not impacted by the weather nearly as much and can be open for longer, even year-round if that is how your facility operates. On the other hand, if the climate is generally stable where you are and you feel confident that an attraction outside could get a lot of consistent use, go for it!
